I've been tutoring a 26 year old "kid," an inmate in a correctional facility, to improve his marginal reading skills. He loves the first in the Junkyard Dan series. As he tells me often, "this will be the first book I've ever read." I'm writing to tell Elise Leonard what a great idea she had to do the series, and how "on target" she is in the approach, humor, content and "voice" of the narrator. Beautifully done. Elise, I totally get your purpose of putting out cool books for to help struggling readers learn to read, but your books are more than that! Your books are a self esteem tool, a career advancement tool, an SLD tool, a Drop out prevention tool, and an intervention to gangs. Your books are more than just fun...they are a life raft for an alarming portion of the at risk kids that I am so passionate about reaching!!!!
