We have ABE classes at our local treatment center twice a week. Yesterday, I had one of our instructors take two of the Junkyard Dan books to give to two of our very low level readers who are in there. She had the two of them sit across from each other and take turns reading them to each other. She said it was hysterical...the two of them sat and laughed, then called her over and said to her, "You're not going to believe what just happened in this book!" and proceeded to tell her. They were so excited about the book! When it was break time, one of them came back from break early, immediately picked the book up and started reading - this from someone who hates to read! Elise, I totally get your purpose of putting out cool books for to help struggling readers learn to read, but your books are more than that! Your books are a self esteem tool, a career advancement tool, an SLD tool, a Drop out prevention tool, and an intervention to gangs. Your books are more than just fun...they are a life raft for an alarming portion of the at risk kids that I am so passionate about reaching!!!! | I teach 6, 7 and 8th grade Resource Literacy. My students are reading between K-3rd grade level. I have really struggled to find books that are interesting to them (not my dog fetched the ball), and are at their level. Our wonderful Media Specialist knew of you and the series from working at a Juvenile Prison. He ordered your books and hoped that my kids would like them. The books came in yesterday, and I shared a few with my classes, and all of my boys have already been to the library and checked them out!!
