And yes, we know. We do take quite a bit of poetic license (particularly with punctuation) to GET the books on these reading levels, but THESE BOOKS WORK, the struggling reader LOVES them, and the books increase with difficulty with every book the reader reads. (The reading levels for each series increase at a rate where the reader can't even TELL. Yet, the reader WILL notice that their reading scores and fluency are increasing - but have no idea WHY!)

You will need a PDF reader to see these samples.
Please make sure you are viewing the PDFs at their "actual size" so you can see them in their actual size.

Otherwise, they will be HUMONGOUSLY GIGANTIC.

(AKA: GINORMOUS!)

And everything will look a bazillion times larger than the actual-sized print.

[Which just happens to be a pet peeve of ours here at Nox Press.]

We say that because we have NO IDEA why other publishing houses print their materials for older struggling, emergent and ESL leaners with HUGE fonts.

To be quite frank (and a bit silly), we equate the huge font for the struggling, emergent and ESL reader to be as totally ridiculous as when we see people shouting at foreigners.

It makes us walk up to the shouters and say,
"They're not deaf, you know, they just don't speak the language and can't understand you!"

So we at Nox Press think the BIG FONT thing is a silly, insulting concept,
because for the most part, our readers don't have trouble SEEING!

{We hope we haven't offended anyone. But like we said, it IS a pet peeve of ours.}

Thank you for visiting Nox Press.

What can I say about the Junkyard Dan series? Initially, I purchased the first two books to read them myself and see if I thought our learners would be interested in them. I was excited and surprised when I couldn’t put them down! I had to finish them. I figured if they held my interest, they might hold our learners’ interest as well.

They do!

The characters are 3-dimensional! The plots are timely and intricate! The relationships are emotional and have depth! How do you manage to do that so that a learner newly adventuring into reading can be successful? I don’t know you (except for a couple of phone calls), but I think passion, knowledge, talent, and hard work – that’s your killer combo.

The workbooks shouldn’t be called workbooks; they should be called funbooks, or smilebooks, or laughbooks. Your workbooks help to lighten spirits and heal hearts! Often, that’s something our learners need.

When I took my first look at the Junkyard Dan series I could hardly wait to share them with teachers at my school. I had spent years as a teacher trying to find reading material for my very low reading level high school students. These students were embarrassed to read the books that were at their reading level but could not read well enough to read even low level high school material. Junkyard Dan is perfect for these kids. I'm the librarian now and I bought several sets of Junkyard Dan books and workbooks to share. We are using them in ISS and in reading classes (regular and ESE). Teachers tell me their students love them and that no one minds being seen reading these books.

You can expect us to order every new book Nox Press offers.

The Junkyard Dan novels turned my students from resisters to readers. These engaging stories that are easy to read caught their attention and kept it.

Once one student read the first Junkyard Dan novel and moved onto the second, I had to buy extra sets because of the number of students asking to read them.

Boys who never wanted to read before were asking to take the books home so they could finish them.
